I think this is true for people coming from non top-tier med schools, but there’s more leeway if you’re coming from a prestigious med school. I know lots of people who were non AOA (some top schools don’t even have AOA) and <250 step 1 who matched at BWH/MGH, especially in internal med since it’s a less competitive specialty.
