They were most likley longnose gar, Lepisosteus osseus. Ive been fishing metro for years, and the only species of gar ive seen back there are the longnose. I only caught fish once I went on Canadian side of shipping channel just north of what I like to call the spark plug. All my normal spots yielding nothing, not even a bite.
